Midnight celebration of Lord Krishna's birth in Patan

About the festival

Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight in Patan's famous Krishna Mandir. Devotees fast through the day and gather at the ornate stone temple for bhajans, dances, and the midnight celebration. The Patan celebration is considered Nepal's most elaborate.

Traditions

  • Midnight Puja — Devotees fast until midnight, then perform elaborate puja at the exact hour of Krishna's birth.
  • Bhajan & Kirtan — Groups sing devotional songs (bhajans) about Krishna's life all night at temples.
  • Dahi Handi — Human pyramid formed to break a clay pot of curd hung high, recreating Krishna's mischievous butter-stealing.

Foods

  • Panchamrit — Sacred mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar offered to Krishna.
  • Makhana — Lotus seeds — part of the fasting foods, symbolising Krishna's simplicity.

Significance

  • Birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, representing divine love and spiritual wisdom

What to wear
