Sagarmatha (8,849 m), known globally as Everest, is the world's highest peak rising from the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. First summited on 29 May 1953 by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary, it remains the ultimate mountaineering challenge drawing hundreds of expeditions each spring and autumn season.
