Three days in Kathmandu without the tourist treadmill

तीन दिन काठमाडौंमा

Ayushma RaiField notes

Skip the bus tours. A neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood plan for first-timers who want the real city.

Why most first visits feel like a treadmill

Kathmandu gets reduced to a checklist: Thamel, three durbar squares, Boudha, Pashupati, Nagarkot sunrise, fly out. You see everything and remember nothing. This three-day plan trades breadth for depth — one valley neighbourhood at a time.

Day 1 — Patan before the buses arrive

Skip Thamel on day one. Start in Patan Durbar Square at 8 AM before the tour groups. The Patan Museum is the single best object lesson in Nepali art in the country — budget ninety minutes. Walk the back lanes to a Newari lunch in a local bhatti, not a rooftop with a view menu.

Day 2 — Boudha at sunset, Pashupati at dawn

Walk Boudha kora clockwise three times at sunset when the butter lamps come out. Save Pashupati for the next morning — cremation ghats need a guide who'll explain the rites with the gravity they deserve, not as a photo stop.

Day 3 — Bhaktapur overnight

Take the local bus from Ratna Park. Stay overnight inside the old city. Bhaktapur empties after 6 PM and that's when the pottery squares and narrow lanes actually belong to residents.

What to book (and what not to)

Book a Patan-focused guide for half a day and a Pashupati morning walk — skip the packaged "Kathmandu highlights" bus. Stay in Patan or Bhaktapur instead of Thamel if you want quiet evenings. Flights and treks can wait until you've actually met the city.
